From horse-riding to off-road racing, student-athletes in the Imperial Valley do it all! Both in and out of school, many Valley youth are multi-sport athletes. Scroll down further to learn more about some of these student-athletes who participate in athletics and extra-curricular activities both in and out of school.

Tanner Currier

Tanner is currently a sophomore at Brawley Union HS and a member of the BUHS baseball team. He has been a starting 2nd baseman on Varsity since his freshman year and has been playing travel baseball since he was 7 years old. Besides excelling athletically at BUHS, Tanner also excels academically, holding a 4.0 GPA. Away from school, Tanner participates heavily in off-road racing circuits as a member of Badlands Motorsports. Tanner is also a long-time 4-H member, raising feeder calves and goats throughout the years.

Chad Goodsell

Chad is currently a junior at Holtville High School and also attends Freedom Academy of Imperial Valley. At HHS, Chad is a member of the Varsity Golf Team as well as a member of Holtville FFA. Away from school, Chad spends his time desert racing and riding dirt bikes, and is an active member of American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) District 38. He has been a part of District 38 since he was 12 years old. Some of Chad’s accolades in dirt bike racing include being the 2020 -200 Class Champion and the 2021 – 250 Class Champion. His goal in the 2022 racing series is to be the 450 class champion. In March of this year, he raced his dirt bike in the Great American Off Road Race, otherwise known as The Mint 400 in Las Vegas, Nevada with his brother Lance Goodsell. They raced together in the Open Sportsman Class, placing 2nd in class and 4th overall.

Taylor Nelson

Taylor is a 3rd grader at Cross Elementary School in Imperial. She is a member of Southwest Valley 4-H, Yuma Progressive Barrel Racing Association, Imperial Valley Team Penning Association, and Dancin’ Feet Jazz and Tap.

Cyleigh Nelson

Cyleigh is a senior at Imperial High School as well as a dually-enrolled student at Imperial Valley College. Upon graduation, she will be furthering her education at the University of Arizona in the Fall, majoring in Veterinarian Science. At IHS, she a member of the Volleyball and Basketball team. Away from school, Cyleigh participates in Imperial FFA, the Imperial Valley Team Penning Association, and the Yuma Progressive Barrel Racing Association.
